Rethinking health through a somatic lens
Listening to your body as a path to healing
Do you find yourself pushing through or ignoring pain? Reaching for something to pep you up instead of giving yourself the rest you truly need? Or maybe you’re at a breaking point where you can’t ignore it anymore? If so, your body is giving you a very strong message, and it’s time to listen up.
Most of us can relate to these examples because we live in a fast-paced world of nonstop pressure and overstimulation. Our modern culture glorifies productivity and success at all costs. The messaging is clear: Sleep? Overrated. No pain? No gain.
We have been conditioned from a young age to suppress our symptoms and just keep going. But slowing down isn’t failure, it’s your body trying to protect and regulate you. With the amount of endless activation surrounding us, it can be very difficult to calm the body and nervous system from survival mode to a balanced state.
Paying attention and listening to your body is all part of nervous system healing—the foundation of somatic therapy—a process that teaches your body how to regulate itself rather than reacting to activation. When you start listening to those aches, pains and gut feelings, you’re taking action towards sustainable long-term wellbeing and health.
Understanding your body signals
Think of your body signals as a natural early warning system. Just like a siren for a tornado or a tsunami, when your body speaks, you need to pay attention and take action. If you ignore them or delay them, they won’t go away. Instead, the “approaching danger” will only get closer and louder.
Body signals can look like this:
Tension
Fatigue
Headaches
IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
Bloating
Back pain
Joint Pain
Chronic fatigue
Irritability
Sleep issues
Jaw clenching
Overwhelmed
Unmotivated
Shallow or quick breathing
When left untreated, these somatic symptoms can lead to illness, injury, or burnout. But for many of us, we’ve never really learned how to check in with ourselves and our bodies about how we “feel”. And that’s a problem when it comes to catching the early signs of stress or imbalance.
Why listening matters
When you start actively checking in with yourself and paying attention to your body, it’s possible to prevent chronic issues before they escalate. This somatic awareness of your body signals also means you can recover more quickly by addressing symptoms early on, and make better decisions about your sleep and rest patterns, movement and activity level, health and nutrition needs, and your relationships, from personal to professional.
Listening to your body is one of the most powerful health skills you can implement in your life. Your body is wise! If you ask, it will tell you. The simple act of asking yourself “How am I feeling right now?” allows you to rebuild trust and connection with your body, especially if this is a new practice or you have felt disconnected or dissociated from it in the past.
Are you ignoring important body signals?
Are you pushing through pain or fatigue on a daily basis just to “get everything done”? Or maybe you’re disconnecting from your body’s sensations throughout the day and relying on caffeine, sugar, adrenaline, or other stimulants to keep pushing through. If you find that you only stop when your body forces you to—or you struggle to identify whether you need rest, movement, food, or care—these are all clear signs that you’re ignoring important body signals.
If all of these examples feel a little too familiar, you’re not alone. Most people either don’t pay attention to their body signals or have been taught to ignore their body’s signals. The good news is that with small intentional steps, you can teach yourself how to pay attention. If this is all new to you, go slow. When you notice yourself tensing up or feeling uncomfortable, take a quick body check to notice what’s happening rather than ignoring it. Even giving yourself regular 30-second “body check-ins” can make a big difference for somatic healing.
Daily habits to reconnect with your body
Slow down
When you’re in the habit of go-go-go, creating a new habit of slowing down can feel like a luxury you just don’t have time for. But even one minute of stillness can be deeply revealing as you pause, breathe and ask, “How am I feeling right now? What does that feel like in my body? Where do I feel it the most?”
Try a body scan
It can be difficult to connect to your body without practice. A body scan is the perfect method to access this connection. Close your eyes and gently check in with each area of your body, starting from the crown of your head all the way down to the tips of your toes. As you go, visualise and notice where you feel tension, warmth, or discomfort.
Journal or voice note
Writing or recording your journey to somatic body healing can be very revealing, as you’ll see hidden patterns of what you’re experiencing physically and emotionally. You can keep these notes to reflect upon and address.
Ask your body
Your body usually knows what it needs, but perhaps you’ve never asked. Before starting your day, ask, “What do I actually need right now?” Sometimes the answer is sleep, rest, relaxation and community. Other times it might be healthier food, more movement, or better support.
Seek support when needed
Speaking of support…there are many ways to heal through somatic therapy.
For some clients, this looks like body awareness, grounding, breathwork and meditation. For others, resetting the nervous system is shaped by movements like dancing, yoga, stretching, tai chi or qigong. Most people find a combination that works best for them to feel “more in tune” or “more grounded”.
Even just trying new things for a couple of minutes each day can lead to improved outcomes.
